Borders No Problem For Our Detainees.
If you thought your latest lockdown situation was a bit much, how would you like to live in a detention centre? It's tense. People get angry. Sometimes they're awaiting deportation because they've already committed crimes in angry moments.
Since these detainees are allowed phones and computers, they've often reached out to us over the years; wishing to be part of a Circuit Breaker group, but unsure how to do it.
Last year, Hope Centre's Ranandy Stanley and Rae Burton (of Pacific Care & Support) stepped up to the plate to facilitate an online group for 8 of these Brisbane detainees.
Just like people on the outside, detainees are often seeking new tools for change. The ten-week group was not only a resounding success, but word also soon spread to fellow detainees in other states.
In 2021, these trail-blazing leaders are about to see another 8 detainees from centres across QLD, NSW and VIC graduating together; all from the same online group! Ranandy and Rae say they've been seeing change in the conversations they're having with the men each and every week.
"...each week brings things up that make us think about our actions... it's good."
says one of the men.
If online groups can reach in and transform these brave men, imagine what we can do in other isolated, remote or international communities!
